Brad Shores grew up in Goodland, Kansas and got his BA in Music Education at Fort Hays State University in 1983.  After teaching the Argonne Rebels Drum and Bugle Corps for a year, he moved to Phoenix to work in the Paradise Valley School District.  While in Phoenix, he discovered the pan and began working around town as a steel drum musician.  After moving back to Kansas in 1989, Brad began an 11 year term as Band instructor at Nickerson High School and also started the family band , “Tropical Shores Steel Drum Band” as well as the first high school steel drum band in Kansas.  He also started the first WGI drum line in Kansas called “Rebel Drums” from 1997-2000.

He currently is head band instructor at Haven High School and teaches steel drum band, guitar, band, jazz band and marching band.  He serves as a clinician judge and arranger for many types of groups in and around Kansas.

Originally from Kansas City, Mo., Bryan Alford Jr. performed as a drum-set player all his life until he fell in love with the steel pan while studying music at Missouri Western State University in 1993. Though he marched center snare at MWSU, his love for steel drums led him to West Virginia to study with Dr. Ellie Mannette. Upon returning from West Virginia Bryan formed his band “Caribbean Steel” a calypso and soca band that fuses jazz and R&B. Bryan performed with them for several years before he began to perform as a solo artist. He is also a sought after musician on the gospel circuit. Bryan has performed with Asaph “Alex” Ward featuring the gospel singing group High Praise and has recorded steel drums or percussion on the following CD’s: The Tommie’s, NWDC Choir “In the Sanctuary” Live and Christ Temple “Temple Worship Live.”  Bryan believes that God gives us the gift of music and that music is his ministry. He is the former Minister of Music for the North Western District Council that covers 3 states Colorado, Kansas & Missouri. Bryan currently resides in St. Joseph, Mo. He is the owner of “Alford Music” percussion school, a cast member of the professional percussion ensemble “Sticks of Thunder” and the 2008 recipient of the Kelsey Beshears award, an award given by the NAACP and the YWCA for racial equality and his work with youth in the community. www.caribbeansteellive.com

Details 

Garrett Sanborne has been the Director of Percussion at Abilene High School since 2001.  He directs the Drumline, Percussion Ensembles, and the newly formed Steel Band.  He also teaches the beginner percussion classes at Lincoln, Mann, and Franklin Middle Schools.  He performs with the Abilene Philharmonic, plays drumset for AHS musicals, and plays steel drums in his spare time.


Mr. Sanborne is originally from West Chester, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia.  He holds two degrees in Percussion Performance: a Bachelor of Music from the University of Delaware in 1997 and a Master's of Music from the University of Akron , Ohio in 1999.  He recently received his Music Education Certification from McMurry University.


In 1996, Mr. Sanborne performed across the country on tour with the World Champion Drum Corps Star of Indiana and "Brass Theater III," the group which has evolved into the Broadway sensation Blast!  He was a member of the University of Akron Steel Drum Band, whose 1999 compact disc recording, "Live at E. J. Thomas Hall," was nominated for a Grammy.


Mr. Sanborne has been teaching percussion since 1994, and has taught throughout Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, and Texas.  His areas of expertise include marching percussion, drumset, and steel drums.  He has also written dozens of arrangements for marching percussion, steel band, and mallet ensemble, for both high school and college ensembles.

Joshua R. Quillen has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in groups all over the country, including international performances in Trinidad and Tobago. He frequently works with steel drum bands as a clinician/educator and currently serves as the artistic director of the steel band program at New York University. He has commissioned and premiered nearly a dozen new works for the instrument, and recently presented a concert of all new works for pan at the British Art Gallery in late November. Well versed in marimba and multiple-percussion, he has performed at such events as Music on the Edge at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburg, PA, and the Look and Listen Festival in New York City. He is currently a student of Robert Van Sice at Yale University.

Hailed as the "Paganini of the Steelpan," Liam Teague currently serves as Co-Director of the NIU Steelband and Assistant Professor of Music at Northern Illinois University, the same institution where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music.  He has distinguished himself as the recipient of many awards in his homeland Trinidad and Tobago, including championships for his ability on the steelpan, violin and recorder.  In addition to being the Co-winner of the National Steelband Festival Solo Championship of Trinidad and Tobago, Teague won the Saint Louis Symphony Volunteers Association Young Artists Competition in 1998.  Under the baton of Dr. Paul Freeman Teague with the Chicago Sinfonietta gave the world premiere of Illinois composer Jan Bach's "Concerto for Steelpan and Orchestra" in 1995 at Orchestra Hall, Chicago.  Many subsequent appearances with Chicago Sinfonietta have followed and among the most noteworthy was his 2001 performance at Kennedy Center.  He has also performed with many ensembles including the Czech National Symphony, Panama National Symphony, Saint Louis Symphony, Buffalo Symphony, Sinfonia Da Camera, Rockford Symphony, Dartmouth Wind Ensemble, North Shore Concert Band, and University of Wisconsin-Madison Marching Band.

Teague's commitment to demonstrating the great musical possibilities of the steelpan have taken him to Europe, Asia, North and Central America, and the Caribbean.  Some of these performances include opening for the MC Hammer tour of Trinidad, stints at the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, Grenada Spice Jazz Festival, and the Trinidad and Tobago Pan Jazz Festival.  As a member of the NIU Steelband, he has played at the Seoul Drum Festival in South Korea and the 2000 edition of the World Steelband Festival in Trinidad.  As a performer and clinician, Liam Teague has given presentations at several Percussive Arts Society International Conventions and at numerous universities throughout the United States.  At Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Door County, Wisconsin, and California State University Summer Arts Camp he holds Artist-in-Residence positions.  He has also given recitals and clinics at Interlochen Academy for the Performing Arts.  Teague regularly appears in concert with NIU colleague and multi-instrumentalist Robert Chappell, as well as with the band they co-founded "PANORAMIC!!!"   In 2002, "PANORAMIC!!!" was invited to tour Taiwan as part of that country's commemoration of its National Concert Hall's 15th Anniversary.

Dr. Mark Berry is Assistant Professor of Percussion at Western Kentucky University where he teaches applied lessons and percussion ensemble.  He is currently Principal Timpanist with the Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra.  As timpanist and percussionist, he has performed with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Cleveland Baroque Ensemble, and the Evansville Philharmonic.  Prior to coming to Western Kentucky he taught percussion at West Virginia University.

In a chamber music setting, Dr. Berry’s percussion playing can be heard on several recordings on the Equilibrium and Centaur labels.  He has been active commissioning new works and records often for Predilection Studios. 

Dr. Berry’s performance interests lie not only in symphonic genres, but in other genres as well.  In 2003  Dr. Berry founded the WKU Steelband as the recipient of a grant award from the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education.  He currently plays both drumset and steelpan with the Western Kentucky Faculty Jazz Quintet.

Mat Britain has pursued his love of percussion from the plains of Kansas to the island of Trinidad. He has traveled numerous times to Trinidad and performed with the Amoco Renegades Steel Band at the prestigious Panorama Festival. Living in Nashville, Tennessee, he directs the Vanderbilt University Steel Drum Band program and leads his professional steel band Deep Grooves. His recorded efforts include the steel drum solo on the quadruple platinum hit "When The Sun Goes Down" by mega-star Kenny Chesney as well as recent Chesney cd releases "Be As You Are" (Songs from an Old Blue Chair), and "The Road & the Radio". You can also catch some of Mat's music on numerous tv and radio jingles, episodes of "Live with Regis & Kelly", and if you are up really late at night, re-runs of "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous".

Mat has shared the stage and/or recording studio with music industry veterans such as Grammy Award winning artists Lee Greenwood, Neal McCoy, Charlie Pride, and Louise Mandrell, as well as Nashville's newest stars the Warren Brothers, Rebecca Lynn Howard and Steve Azar. He can also be found touring the country with the Britain/Moore Duo, a unique and creative percussion collaboration with long time friend and Marimba master Dan Moore.

Mat is indeed an All-American percussionist with a global perspective that permeates his grooves, style, and musicianship. He is a proud endorser and clinician for; Pearl Percussion, Zildjian Cymbals, Innovative Percussion mallets and sticks, and XL Protector cases.

Matt has been with the band since 1996 and has been artistic director since 1998.  He holds a bachelor's degree in music education from the Hartt School, and a master's degree in performance from the University of Akron.  His arrangements and original compositions have been featured both in performance and on the band's recent CDs.  Part of his duties at the University of Akron include teaching an arranging class for steel drums and private lessons.

In 2002, Matt traveled to Trinidad to get a first-hand look at the home of pan.  While there, he was able to play with the  Invaders, the Renegades, and Starlift steelbands as well as check out many of the other bands on the island.

Matt is a member of the 7 Mile Isle steel band, a group made up of U of Akron alums which performs throughout the Northeast Ohio region.  The group performs educational concerts for kids through Young Audiences of Greater Cleveland (www.yagc.org) and Children's Concerts Society of Akron as well as countless private bookings.

Matt is a contract member of the Akron Symphony Orchestra and works with one of the Symphony's outreach programs, the PATHS "Pandemonium" Steelband.  He is also the Artistic Director of the Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts Steelband.  As a performer, Matt has premiered chamber works by Ben Johnston, Stuart Saunders Smith, John Bergamo, Emmanuel Sejourne, Robert Carl, and has performed at three Percussive Arts Society International Conventions.  He also is on the faculty of Muskingum College and the Canton Country Day School.

Details 

Scott Johnson graduated from Western Illinois University with a B.A. in Music Theory/Composition in 1992, and immediately began teaching percussion lessons, writing music, and playing in bands.  His compositions, in most cases, have been written for a performing group in which he was a member, or for classes in which he was the teacher.  Commissions from the dance department at W.I.U. as well as encouragement from teachers such as Bret Kuhn and Dr. Richard Cheadle, helped Scott choose his path. 

The Pantastic 4 is Scott’s current focus for composing and performing; a steel pan combo with three percussionists that rotate between pan, marimba, and drum set, supported by a guitarist and bassist.  This group performs Scott’s compositions and has recently recorded a full length cd titled “Lornabarret”.  

In addition to his artistic endeavors, Scott also owns Upbeat Music, a music lesson studio in Chicago that offers private lessons for piano, strings, guitar, percussion, and band instruments.  This has also lead to developing pedagogical concepts that have been incorporated in his compositions.

A 2002 graduate of James Madison University, Scott has been composing and performing music from an early age.  With years of classical and jazz piano training, Scott holds numerous piano composition awards from the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Yamaha Music Education System.

Since picking up steel pan, Scott has played with a variety of ensembles and small combos throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, receiving additional training at the annual Mannette Festival of Steel Workshop in Morgantown, West Virginia.  In 2003, Scott joined steel drum orchestra Pan-a-Mania.  Based in Roanoke, VA, Pan-a-Mania is the top band of Quest Academy, led by pan entrepreneur Richard Rudolph.  Since joining the group, Scott has composed and arranged several pieces exclusively for Quest Academy.  In addition to participating in Pan-a-Mania, Scott performs with and composes/arranges for Spiritual Steel, an ecumenical steel orchestra also based in Roanoke.

Scott's arrangements have been featured at the PANorama Caribbean Music Festival in Virginia Beach, VA, the Mallet Madness Festival held at James Madison University, and on the Quest Academy DVD "Live at the Jefferson Center."

Born 1978 in Denmark. Pannist, composer, and arranger.

Sune Borregaard began playing steel pans in 1989, and has formed and played in several steelbands since.

He plays Caribbean music as well as jazz, and is leader and arranger for the 6-piece steel band Sonic Steel, based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Sonic Steel plays a lot of Latin music in jazzy arrangements.

Besides performing as a jazz soloist, Sune also commits a great deal of his time to incorporate the steel pan in settings that aren’t common for the instrument. For instance he released an avant-garde album with the trio SUMI in 2006, where the possibilities that opens up when pans are combined with effect processors are investigated.

Sune has toured all of Europe several times and began arranging for steelbands in 2001, the same year he began teaching pans in music school.

Sune conducts and writes music for steel pan workshops in Denmark, and was also the arranger for the Danish band at the Steelpan European Festival in 2002. He holds a bachelor in musicology from the University of Copenhagen and a MM in steel pans and jazz from Northern Illinois University.
