“Soca In the Sun” is a great soca/calypso groove with a very catchy melody. Written in the key of A-flat, this composition was intended to explore another key other than the typical steel drum keys while still written in a good range for the lead pan. Knowledge of the ‘songo’ groove is necessary for the intro and solo sections, and might be the most challenging aspect of the entire piece. However, beginning bands could always substitute a calypso groove in its place. There is also an opportunity for a soloist during the ‘open solo’ section, which is mainly a vamp over an E-flat dominant chord. Having a solo section with no real “changes” is great for any beginning improviser to gain experience with improvisation. “Soca In The Sun” should not take long for any high school or college group to learn and would be a great addition to any concert. Enjoy!Difficulty: Medium (great for high school and college steel bands)Instrumentation: tenor/double tenor/double seconds/guitars/bass/drum set/engine room (congas/brake drum/shaker/cowbell/etc.)
